How to write a letter in Hungarian

Official Letter[edit | edit source]

Opening[edit | edit source]

It all depends on your relationship with the person you are writing to. If you are writing an official letter to someone, for example a colleague or a government official, you should use the word “Tisztelt” (“Dear”) at the beginning of your letter.

In some cases, 'Kedves' ('Dear') will also do the trick, as 'Kedves' can be both formal and informal. When writing a formal letter, your best bet is to stick to “Tisztelt.”

When addressing the person, you should always use 'Ön', the honorific form of 'Te' ('you').

Closing[edit | edit source]

If you want to add an ending to an informal message, it is best to use "Üdv". ("Goodbye"). This is the short version of 'Üdvözlettel' (Goodbye).

Informal letter[edit | edit source]

Opening[edit | edit source]

If you are writing to a friend, you can use "Kedves" + first name.

It's fine if you just write "Szia!" ("Hi!").

In a very informal setting, you can use "Csá!" »

Closing[edit | edit source]

With most official or formal messages, the easiest way to end the letter is to write “Tisztelettel” (the Hungarian equivalent of “Best Regards”) + your full name.
