Hi Hungarian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the essential Hungarian vocabulary for drinks. Hungarian drinks have a rich history, and some of them have even become world-famous. With this lesson, you will be able to order drinks in a Hungarian bar or restaurant with ease.

Drinks in Hungary[edit | edit source]

Drinking is a crucial aspect of Hungarian culture. Hungarians enjoy their drinks, and drinking is almost always accompanied by food, conversation, and laughter. Many traditional Hungarian drinks are world-famous, such as Tokaji Aszú, Unicum, and Zwack.

Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the alcoholic beverages. Hungarian alcohol is famous for its quality and variety, and there are many local drinks to try. Be careful not to overdo it, though, especially with the strong spirits.

  • Person 2: Természetesen, milyen bort szeretne? (Of course, what kind of wine would you like?)
  • Person 1: Egy pohár vörösbort, kérem. (A glass of red wine, please.)
  • Person 2: Rendben van. (All right.)
  • Person 1: Mit ajánl a ház söre közül? (What do you recommend from the house beers?)
  • Person 2: Az arany, vagy a barna ale nagyon finom. (The Gold or the Brown Ale is very tasty.)
  • Person 1: Kérek egy Unicumot. (Can I have an Unicum?)
  • Person 2: Az Unicumot általában étkezés után isszák, mert segít megemészteni az ételt. (Unicum is usually drunk after meals as it helps with digestion.)

Non-Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

If you do not drink alcohol, do not worry, Hungarian non-alcoholic drinks are also delicious. Some of them can even be mixed with alcohol, such as the famous szörp.

  • Person 1: Kérek egy pohár szörpöt. (Can I have a glass of fruit syrup?)
  • Person 2: Milyen ízesítést kérsz? (What flavor would you like?)
  • Person 1: Eperízt kérek. (Strawberry flavor, please.)
  • Person 2: Rendben van. (All right.)
  • Person 1: Van itt valamilyen üdítő? (Do you have any soft drinks here?)
  • Person 2: Igen, van kóla, fanta, és sprite is. (Yes, we have Coke, Fanta, and Sprite.)
