"Be" Verbs

In Halh Mongolian, the verb "be" has two forms: "байх" and "байгаа". Both of these verbs mean "to be" or "to exist". However, they are used differently in sentences based on tense and subject. In general, "байх" is used for present tense statements and "байгаа" is used for past tense ones. Let's look at some examples:

Намайг маш их залуус байгаа.	Na-mai-g mash ih za-luu-s bai-gaa.	I was a very good student.
Тэр хоол хүн болох гэж байхдаа итгэлтэй байгаа.	Ter ho-ol khun bo-lokh gej baih-daa it-gel-tei bai-gaa.	He was certain that the food was human.
Энэ нь л хүүхдүүд байна.	E-ne n l khiikh-dde-d bai-na.	These are children.
Би л сайн хэв маягт байна.	Bi l sai-n khew ma-yagt bai-na.	I am in good health.

In the first two examples, "байгаа" is used because the sentence is in the past tense. In the third and fourth examples, "байна" is used because the sentences are in the present tense. In the fourth example, "байна" is used with the adjective "сайн" to describe the subject's state of being.

It's important to note that the use of "байх" and "байгаа" is not always strict. Sometimes, "байгаа" can be used for present tense sentences, and vice versa.

Negation

In Halh Mongolian, negation is formed by adding "гүй" after the verb. "гүй" means "not". Let's look at some examples:

Би сонсгүй.	Bi sons-gui.	I do not hear.
Тэр биш байгаа.	Ter bish bai-gaa.	He was not here.

In both of these examples, "гүй" is added after the verb ("сонс" and "байгаа") to indicate negation.

Question Formation

In Halh Mongolian, questions are formed by adding the question particle "уу" at the end of the sentence. Let's look at some examples:

Та ямар хоол юм уу?	Ta yamar ho-ol yum uu?	What food do you like?
Энэ нь танд таалагдсан уу?	E-ne n tand taalag-dsan uu?	Did you like this?

In both of these examples, "уу" is added at the end of the sentence to indicate a question.

Practice Dialogue

Person 1: Би гэр байхдаа зүгээр л зөв зохицоход бодоход их баярлаж байна. (I am very happy to be properly decorating my house.)

Person 2: Энэ үү? Гэхдээ та гэрээ зохицуулж ээ. (Really? You're renovating your house.)

Person 1: Үргэлж зохицоод өгөх боловч сүүлд зарим боломжгүй гэдгийг сонирхож байгаа. (I'm planning to renovate it soon, but I'm worried about some of the limitations lately.)

Person 2: Танд зөвхөн дээрээс ойрхон хурдан хөдөлж байх шаардлагатай бөгөөд гэрэлд өөр хийх ёстой гэж үнэлээд байна уу? (Do you just need to move around quickly on top and need to do it differently?)

Person 1: Тийм байна. Ийм ашигт малднаас олон хүн хэрэглээд баярлаж чаддаг. (Yes, exactly. Many people can enjoy the use of the house from now on.)
