The Future Tense[edit | edit source]
The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. In Gujarati, the future tense is formed by adding the suffix "-เชถเซเช" ("-shuM") to the end of the verb. Let's take an example to understand better:
Gujarati | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
เชนเซเช เชญเซเชเชจ เชเชฐเซเชถเซเช | "HuM Bhojan Kari-shuM" | I will eat food. |
เชคเชฎเซ เชเชฐ เชเชเชถเซเช | "Tame Ghar Jai-shuM" | You will go home. |
เชคเซ เชเชฟเชคเชพเชฌ เชตเชพเชเชเชถเซเช | "Te Kitab Van-chuM" | He/She will read the book. |
In the above examples, we can see that we have added the suffix "-เชถเซเช" ("-shuM") to the end of the verb to make the future tense.
Analogical Help: Think of the future tense like a time machine that takes you to a future event, where you can see what will happen.
Exceptions[edit | edit source]
Not all Gujarati verbs follow the same pattern. There are a few exceptions where we need to add different suffixes for the future tense.
1. Verbs ending with "-เชตเซเช" ("-vuM"): For verbs ending with "-เชตเซเช" ("-vuM"), we replace the "-เชตเซเช" ("-vuM") with "-เชถเซเช" ("-shuM") to form the future tense.
Example:
Gujarati | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
เชนเซเช เชฌเซเชฒเชถเซเช | "HuM Bol-shuM" | I will speak. |
2. Verbs ending with "-เชคเซ" ("-to"): For verbs ending with "-เชคเซ" ("-to"), we add "-เชฏเชพเช" ("-yaM") to the end of the verb to form the future tense.
Example:
Gujarati | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
เชนเซเช เชเชพเชฏ เชเชพเชถเซเชถเซเช | "HuM Gay Gaa-shuM" | I will sing a song. |
3. Verbs ending with "-เชเชตเซเช" ("-aavuM") and "-เชเชตเซเช" ("-jvuM"): For verbs ending with "-เชเชตเซเช" ("-aavuM") and "-เชเชตเซเช" ("-jvuM"), we use "เชจเซ" ("ne") after the verb to form the future tense.
Example:
Gujarati | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
เชนเซเช เชเชตเชถเซเช เชคเชฎเซ เชเชพเชถเซเช เชนเชพเช | "HuM Aa-vashuM Tame Ja-sho: HaM" | I will come, you will go: Yes. |
