Georgian Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Georgian learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Georgian grammar. This is an important part of the language and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively. We will look at how to form the conditional mood, when to use it, and some examples of its use.

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: The Conjugation System, Future Tense, Infection of noun endings on vowels & Conjugation of the verb โ€œto haveโ€ in the past tense.

Forming the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood in Georgian is formed by adding the suffix -แƒแƒœ/-แƒ”แƒœ to the verb stem. For example, the verb แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ (to come out) has the stem แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒ˜แƒ“- and the conditional form is แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒ˜แƒ“แƒแƒœ (would come out).

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

There are some irregular verbs in Georgian which have different stems in the conditional mood. For example, the verb แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ“แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ (to finish) has the stem แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ“- in the conditional mood, instead of the usual แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ“แƒ”-.

When to Use the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or a wish. It can also be used to express politeness or to make a suggestion.

For example:

  • แƒ—แƒฃ แƒ›แƒ” แƒแƒฅ แƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ“แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ˜, แƒ›แƒ” แƒแƒ›แƒ˜แƒก แƒจแƒ”แƒกแƒแƒฎแƒ”แƒ‘ แƒฃแƒ™แƒ•แƒ” แƒ˜แƒชแƒแƒ“แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ˜แƒแƒœ. (If I were here, I would already know about this.)
  • แƒ—แƒฃ แƒ›แƒ” แƒแƒฅ แƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ“แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ˜, แƒ›แƒ” แƒแƒ›แƒ˜แƒก แƒจแƒ”แƒกแƒแƒฎแƒ”แƒ‘ แƒ›แƒ”แƒขแƒ˜ แƒ˜แƒœแƒคแƒแƒ แƒ›แƒแƒชแƒ˜แƒ แƒ›แƒ˜แƒแƒฆแƒฌแƒ”แƒ•แƒ“แƒ˜. (If I were here, I would get more information about this.)
