Cultural facts[edit | edit source]

Galicia has a rich culture that is reflected in its attire. The traditional costume of Galicia is very distinctive and unique. For women, the traditional costume consists of a linen blouse with an embroidered neckline and a long skirt. Women also wear a colorful scarf and a velvet vest over the blouse. For men, the traditional costume consists of a linen shirt, trousers, and a jacket. A handkerchief is also worn around the neck.

In Galicia, there is a famous tradition where people will wear a straw hat during the summer months. These straw hats are called "pallás" and are a common sight during the summer. It is said that the straw hats originated as protection from the sun when working in the fields. Nowadays, they are worn more as a fashion statement than for practical purposes.

Another popular item in Galicia is the "albarca." These are traditional wooden clogs that are made from poplar wood. They are a very popular shoe in Galicia and are often worn with the traditional costume. Nowadays, albarcas are not as commonly worn, but they are still a popular souvenir for tourists.

Finally, no discussion on clothes in Galicia would be complete without mentioning the traditional "Poncho Gallego." This is a type of wool blanket that has been used for centuries to keep Galicians warm during the harsh winter months. The Poncho Gallego is still worn today and is often used as a symbol of Galician culture.
