Egyptian Arabic Grammar - Give your Opinion

Hi Egyptian Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will explore the use of verbs and expressions that we can use to give our opinion in Egyptian Arabic. This is an intermediate lesson, so if you are a beginner, I recommend that you review some basic Arabic grammar and vocabulary before diving into this lesson. Don't forget, to improve your Egyptian Arabic Grammar, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!

Giving your opinion[edit | edit source]

In everyday conversations, we often need to express an opinion about something or someone. Here are some common expressions and verbs that you can use:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
برأيي b-ra'ī In my opinion
أنا أعتقد anā a'taqid I think
أظن athun I believe
لا أعتقد lā a'taqid I don't think
لدي ملاحظة ladi mulāzima I have a remark
أحب / أفضل uhibb / afdal I like / I prefer

Example dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: ما رأيك في هذا الفيلم؟ (mā ra'ayk fi hādha al-film?) (What do you think of this movie?)
  • Person 2: أنا أعتقد أنه فيلم ممتاز. (anā a'taqid 'anahu film mumtāz.) (I think it's an excellent movie.)

Agreeing and disagreeing[edit | edit source]

When we give our opinion, we may need to agree or disagree with someone else's opinion. Here are some expressions that you can use to agree or disagree:

معك حق ma'ak haqq You are right
أوافقك الرأي awāfīk ar-ra'y I agree with you
لا أوافق lā awāfīk I disagree
موافق mawāfīk Agreed / OK
كلا / نعم kalā / na'am No / Yes

  • Person 1: أنا أظن أن هذا الفيلم جيد جدًا. (anā athun 'an hādha al-film jayyid jiddan.) (I believe that this movie is very good.)
  • Person 2: أوافقك الرأي. (awāfīk ar-ra'y.) (I agree with you.)

Emphasizing your opinion[edit | edit source]

Sometimes we need to emphasize our opinion for it to feel stronger. Here are some expressions that you can use to do so:

حقًا haqqan Really / truly
بكل صراحة bikull ṣarāḥah Honestly
بلا شك bilā shakk Without a doubt
على الأقل 'ala al-aqal At least

Example dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: هذا الفيلم سيء جدًا. (hādha al-film sayy' jiddan.) (This movie is very bad.)
  • Person 2: بكل صراحة، أنا لا أوافق. (bikull ṣarāḥah, anā lā awāfīk.) (Honestly, I disagree.)

Asking for someone's opinion[edit | edit source]

To ask for someone's opinion or point of view, we can use the following expressions:

ما رأيك؟ mā ra'ayk? What do you think?
ما هو رأيك في ...؟ mā huwa ra'ayk fii...? What is your opinion on...?
هل توافقني الرأي؟ hal tawāfīnī ar-ra'y? Do you agree with me?

  • Person 1: ما رأيك في هذا الفيلم؟ (mā ra'ayk fi hādha al-film?) (What do you think of this movie?)
  • Person 2: أنا أظن أنه فيلم رائع. (anā athun 'anhu film rā'i'). (I think it's a fantastic movie.)
