Numbers in Central Kurdish[edit | edit source]

Central Kurdish, like other Kurdish dialects, has its own numbers system which is Indo-European in origin. The system is a combination of Persian, Arabic and Turkish numbers. Here are the numbers from 1-10 in Central Kurdish:

Central Kurdish Pronunciation English Translation
yek jek 1
du 2
se 3
çwar char 4
pênc penj 5
şeş shesh 6
heft haft 7
heşt hasht 8
neh noh 9
deh dah 10

Notice that some numbers have different pronunciations than their Arabic or Persian origins. For example, "sê" (3) is pronounced as "se" in Central Kurdish.

Counting in Central Kurdish[edit | edit source]

Now let's practice counting in Central Kurdish. Imagine you're buying apples from a Kurdish vendor and you want to buy 7 of them. Here's an example dialogue:

  • Vendor: سوێدەر، بەرگیەک بەردەوام بۆ خۆشک بەفرۆشیم؟ (Sweedar, bergîyek berdewam bo khoshek befroshim?) (Hello, would you like to buy an apple?)
  • You: باشە، هەفت بەفرۆشەیەکەم دەمەنێ (Bashe, heft befroshayekam demene) (Sure, I want to buy seven of them please.)
  • Vendor: بەخێربێی (Bekherbayi) (Welcome)

Congratulations! You can now count to 10 in Central Kurdish! Keep practicing and don't forget to check out find native speakers and ask them any questions you might have.

Interesting facts[edit | edit source]

Did you know that the Kurdish numerals were once used by the ancient Persians? These numerals belonged to the family of the Ancient Eastern numerals, and the medes and persians used it. In fact, the numbers 1-10 in Persian are the same as the Kurdish numbers 1-10.
