Central Kurdish Vocabulary - Colors

In this lesson, we will learn about the colors in Central Kurdish. Colors are an important part of our lives and cultures, they can convey different meanings and feelings. So, let's get started!

Essential vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Before we dive into the topic, let's first learn some essential vocabulary:

Basic colors[edit | edit source]

Now that we know the essential vocabulary, let's learn some basic colors in Central Kurdish:

Red[edit | edit source]

Red is the color of passion and love. In Central Kurdish, it is "سەرۆک" (serok).

Example:

  • Person 1: ئەم کتێبە سەرۆکە. (Am kitêba serokê.) - (This book is red.)
  • Person 2: من ئەم کتێبە خۆشەویستمە. (Min am kitêbê xosheviyasta.) - (I like this book.)

Yellow[edit | edit source]

Yellow is the color of the sun, warmth, and happiness. In Central Kurdish, it is "زەنژەر" (zenjer).

Example:

  • Person 1: ئەم دەرچەیە زەنژەرە. (Am derçeyê zenjere.) - (This door is yellow.)
  • Person 2: هەڵمەندم کە تۆ ئەم دەرچەیە خۆشەویستت. (Helmandim ke to am derçeyê xosheviyat.) - (I am happy that you like this door.)

Green[edit | edit source]

Green is the color of nature and life. In Central Kurdish, it is "سەوز" (sewz).

Example:

  • Person 1: چەند گوشتەیەک لەو بوخچەیەدا هەیە؟ (Çend guştekî law buxçeyêda heye?) - (How many plants are in that garden?)
  • Person 2: لەو بوخچەیەدا دەستێکی سەوزی هەیە، هەتا بوی دیاری دەکات. (Lêw buxçeyêda destêkî sewzî heye, hatta boy diyarî dekat.) - (There is a green hand, and it even gives off a smell.)

Black[edit | edit source]

Black is the color of darkness, mystery, and power. In Central Kurdish, it is "سور" (sor).

Example:

  • Person 1: مەشینی خەڵکانی کۆی خاوەنییە. (Mêşîna xelkani koy xawanîye.) - (The people's car is black.)
  • Person 2: ئەم مەشینەی بەخێر بەڵام زۆر بهێزە. (Am mêşînê bekhêr belam zor behaze.) - (This is a good car, but it's too expensive.)

White is the color of purity, peace, and innocence. In Central Kurdish, it is "پەمەر" (pemêr).

Example:

  • Person 1: ئەم کڵاوەیە پەمەرە. (Am klawe ye pemêre.) - (This shirt is white.)
  • Person 2: تۆ خۆشترین کڵاوەت دەڵێیە. (To xoshterin klawetat delye.) - (You have the most beautiful shirt.)

Blue is the color of calmness and stability. In Central Kurdish, it is "شین" (shin).

Example:

  • Person 1: ئەم ماوەیە شینە. (Am mawyê shinê.) - (This pen is blue.)
  • Person 2: بۆ من باشترین ماوەی تیچەکێک بۆ ئەم بابەتەیە دەیە. (Bo min bashtrin mawayê tîçekî bo am babatêyen deya.) - (For me, the best color for this subject is blue.)

Now that we can name the colors in Central Kurdish, let's dive into some interesting cultural facts:

- In Kurdish culture, the color green is considered a symbol of life, happiness, and prosperity. People often decorate their houses and clothes with green.

- In Kurdish weddings, the bride's dress is usually red, while the groom and his close family members wear green.

- Yellow is considered an important color during Kurdish New Year celebrations (Newroz). People usually wear yellow clothes and decorate their houses with yellow flowers.

- Black is often associated with mourning and is the traditional color of Kurdish funerals.

- White is considered a pure and holy color in Kurdish culture. People often wear white clothes during religious festivals and ceremonies.
