In this lesson, we will learn how to give our opinion using Burmese grammar. Opinions are important, especially when we are trying to communicate with native speakers. By giving our opinion, we can show them that we are interested in their culture, language, and way of life. So, let's get started!

Expressing your opinion

When you want to express your opinion in Burmese, you can use the following words:

Burmese	Pronunciation	English
ရှိသော	[ʃìθɔ́]	to have, to exist, to be
ရှိပါက	[ʃì bàɡá]	if there is, if there are, when there is, when there are
စိတ်ရှိသော	[sḭʔ ʃìθɔ́]	to think
တော်တော်မျှ	[tɔ́ tɔ́ mj̥a̰]	I feel like

For example, you can say:

• ကျွန်တော်တော်မှာ မြန်မာ့ အမျိုးသားတိုင်းပြည့်စုံတဲ့ အေၾကာင်းအရာ ရှိသော်လား။ (kywan tawtaw mya galgalhmu, myanma a mjothay tohn pyinsumtantai a-eikawngar-ar yosèthaunglá) - Do you have any experience with Burmese culture and customs?

• မြန်မာ့ ကမ္ဘာသားတိုင်းအတွက် နှိုင်ပြုတဲ့ အမျိုးသားစာပိုဒ် ရှိနေမယ်။ (myanma a kambhathá-ahtúntha-adi thamytharsapuid risènè mè) - I think there are many interesting things to learn about Burmese people for foreigners.

• မနက်တက် ဘာသာများကို စိတ်ရှိသည်။ (manektak bhatamahkaì sèttʃìθè) - I am thinking about the Burmese language in the morning.

• ကျွန်တော်တို့အချစ်နောက်ပြီးသော်လည်း တော့တော့မျှတော့ ချစ်တာကို စိတ်ရှိပါတယ်။ (kywan tautau achènaung pyitay lun tila lah, tautau mjet tau khèta-kaw sèttʃìpa tè) - I feel like we have achieved something great and we should be proud of it.

In Burmese, we often omit the subject pronoun, especially when it is obvious from the context. Don't worry too much about it, just remember to add it when you want to emphasize the subject.

For example:

• ကျွန်တော်တို့ အဆိုးသတ်ကို မြန်မာသားနှင့် ဆက်သွယ်ရန် ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ (kywan tautau ahtohtkaw myanmathaì hnèì sakyuynah pèba tè) - We are interested in learning about Burmese culture and want to ask questions.

• အချာစိတ်ရှိရင် သင့်အနေနဲ့ ဆက်သွယ်စေချင်ပါတယ်။ (akhya sèttʃìrisin saì sakyusèchan pèta) - When you have an idea, please feel free to ask me any questions.

Talking about your preferences

In Burmese, we use the following words to talk about our preferences:

Burmese	Pronunciation	English
အကြောင်း	[àdʑáʊɴ]	like
မကြောင်းသော	[mədʑáʊɴðɔ́]	dis/like
အကောင်းဆုံး	[àkàʊɴ sòʊɴ]	favorite
မကောင်းဆုံး	[məkàʊɴ sòʊɴ]	least favorite

For example:

• ကျွန်တော်တို့သည် မြန်မာ့ရှိ အဖြူအမြောက် အကြီးအမြောက်ကို အကြောင်းဆုံးထားပေးပါတယ်။ (kywan tautau mjanma-yaashè ahpè-ahmyaokaw ajáungásòungá htùpaiba ta) - We love to explore the most beautiful sites in Myanmar.

• ကျွန်တော်ဆိုတာ တက်ရောက်ခဲ့တဲ့ မကြောင်းသော အရှေ့တွေရှိနိုင်ပါတယ်။ (kywan sècha takerawkètè mədʑáʊɴðɔ́ ashé-tawraih tawè sènèhúnba ta) - We don't like places that are too crowded.

• မြန်မာသမ္မတ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံး စကားလေးတွေကို ထားမျှပါနော်။ (myanma samatt kywan tautau raì akàʊɴsòʊñ saka:lètaw-kaw htamhpa nè) - Myanmar's traditional foods are our favorite.

• သင့်ရဲ့ မကောင်းဆုံး စာအုပ်ကို မကြောင်းသောအချိန်မှာ ဖော်ပြပါစေ။ (thingya rai məkàʊɴsòʊñ saca-up kaw mədʑáʊɴðɔ́ ahtchaing-mha pautpya sa) - Please avoid serving my least favorite dish if possible.

Here is an example conversation to practice giving your opinion in Burmese:

• A: မြန်မာ့ ဥပမာအရေအတွက် သင့်ရဲ့ အကြောင်း ဘယ်လောက်လဲ။ (myanma a eipama athahtawkè thinga rai akjaungá bè-lauka-law)
• B: ကြိုက်နာမှာတော့ မင်းကြီးမင်းဆိုတာ ဘယ်လောက်လဲဆိုတာကို စိတ်ရှိပါတယ်။ (kjuuna-myá-tawà, minga. mjì-mjì-saita-bè-law-kò sèttʃì tà)
• A: ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးမျှင်ကုန်ပိုင်းများကို မကြောင်းတဲ့သူတစ်ယောက်ပါ။ (Kywan tautau-rai patthasòungmasin kunpè-ungaw mjaungátautày sa mya)
• B: ကျွန်တော်ရှိတယ်လို့ စိတ်ရှိတာတွေကို ကောင်းမတိုင်းကို လေ့လာပြီးဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ (kywan shètai lè saìta tawkyamtaiko lelè-lapya pyet-pya ta)

Translation:

• A: What's your favorite season in Myanmar?
• B: I like the rainy season because I enjoy seeing the greenery.
• A: You are a person who loves nature more than anything.
• B: That's because I think it's important to appreciate the beauty of nature.
