Ancient Greek impersonal verbs[edit | edit source]

Some phrases don't really have a subject at all; they just express motion. We refer to these as impersonal sentences. Greek had a wide variety of impersonal verbs that may be used, as well as certain verbs that had no other purpose.

Verb Meaning
δοκεῖ It seems (best)
ἔξεστι It is possible
πάρεστι It belongs
πρέπει It is fitting
προσήκει It concerns
συμφέρει It is profitable /expedient / useful
Meaning (present tense) Verb
It is raining ὕει, ὕσει, --, --, ὗσται, ὕσθη
It is snowing νείφει, νείψει, ἔνειψε(ν)
Greek English
δεῖ με, δεήσει, ἔδει                            It is necessary for me or I must
χρὴ με, ἐχρῆν or  χρῆν                      It is necessary for me or I must
ἔξεστι μοι, ἐξέσται, ἐξῆν                  It is possible for me or I can
πάρεστι, παρέσται , παρῆν              It is possible for me or I can
δοκεῖ μοι, δόξει, ἔδοξε                    It seems good to me or I decide
πρέπει μοι                                          It befits me or It is proper/right for me
προσήκει μοι It concerns me
συμφέρει μοι                                      It is useful for me
λυσιτέλει μοι                                      It is profitable for me
Μεταμέλει μοι τίνος                            I regret something (gen) or I repent
Μέλει μοι τίνος                                  It concerns me or I care about something (gen)
Μέτεστι μοι τίνος                                I have a share of something (gen)
Χρή σε ταῦτα  δρᾶν                            You should have done this
ἐχρῆν / χρῆν σε ταῦτα δρᾶν              You should have done this
παράσχον An opportunity offering
εἰρημένον It having been stated / laid down
