Ancient Greek impersonal verbs[edit | edit source]
Some phrases don't really have a subject at all; they just express motion. We refer to these as impersonal sentences. Greek had a wide variety of impersonal verbs that may be used, as well as certain verbs that had no other purpose.
Verb | Meaning |

δοκεῖ | It seems (best) |
ἔξεστι | It is possible |
πάρεστι | It belongs |
πρέπει | It is fitting |
προσήκει | It concerns |
συμφέρει | It is profitable /expedient / useful |
Meaning (present tense) | Verb |
---|---|
It is raining | ὕει, ὕσει, --, --, ὗσται, ὕσθη |
It is snowing | νείφει, νείψει, ἔνειψε(ν) |

δοκεῖ μοι, δόξει, ἔδοξε | It seems good to me or I decide |
πρέπει μοι | It befits me or It is proper/right for me |
προσήκει μοι | It concerns me |
συμφέρει μοι | It is useful for me |
λυσιτέλει μοι | It is profitable for me |
Μεταμέλει μοι τίνος | I regret something (gen) or I repent |
Μέλει μοι τίνος | It concerns me or I care about something (gen) |
Μέτεστι μοι τίνος | I have a share of something (gen) |
Χρή σε ταῦτα δρᾶν | You should have done this |
ἐχρῆν / χρῆν σε ταῦτα δρᾶν | You should have done this |
παράσχον | An opportunity offering |
εἰρημένον | It having been stated / laid down |
