I studied Spanish in college for 2 years and when taking the exams, my grade was usually an A. I still can't hold a conversation with Spanish speakers. I had also taken classes in Russian, German and Korean a long time ago. Same thing. I can pass a test, I just can't converse. Any tips on how to break that wall where the language becomes second-nature would help.

I agree with Brigette, I've studies a number of languages over the years, in fact its one of my main hobbies and listening tothe radio helps a lot, start off NOT trying to translate just hear the words and try and mentally repeat them - don't translate and let the rhythm of the language tune your ear, after a while you'll find yourself hearing but understanding little by little but stop if you start translating in your head just give it time. Also, i've found it helps to say the words outloud when I'm reading the language or saying the words looking at the object or action around the room or in my head. Hope this helps!

Hi~! Well what I do is that I try to immerse myself as much as I can into the languaue I am studying. As for your Spanish, I would try to listen to music in Spanish, watch tv shows in spanish, hear conversations in Spanish. I would just watch how people pronounce something and practicing the language would of course help a lot. Practicing, I think, is the main point in perfecting a language and time I've been surrounded by Spanish since I was a small girl and I've been sent to Mexico to practice it, so it just takes a LOT of practice, once again. Hope this helped somehow. Also, I would just focus and master one language first, and then move on to another one. Best of Luck~!

Howdy y'all! I'm new to this website and really excited to learn and explore many languages. While I may not be a language major, my interest in languages is still relatively high and hopefully I'll be able to contribute as well. I've been speaking English all my life and I'm an English education major (hoping to be a high school teacher), so this should be good practice as well

The language I'm most interested in is Japanese :P
