Situated at the base of the majestic Popocatepetl Volcano, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a designated World Heritage Site renowned for its over-wintering habitats of the magnificent monarch butterfly population. Nestled within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion in the State of Mexico, this sanctuary is located just 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City.

Every year, millions of butterflies flock to the sanctuary, transforming it into a mesmerizing spectacle. From October to March, these delicate creatures take refuge in a small fraction of the reserve's vast 56,000 hectares. The mission of the biosphere is not only to protect the butterfly species but also to preserve its precious habitat.

During this immersive day trip, we will embark on an exhilarating adventure through the State of Mexico, delving into its natural wonders.

To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, we will embark on a moderate uphill hike lasting approximately 40 minutes. The exact location of the colony varies each night as the butterflies seek the optimal conditions for survival. At an elevation of 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), we will acclimate ourselves gradually to the altitude.

Please come prepared with comfortable/walking shoes, layered warm clothing, and snacks (both sweet and savory) along with water. In an effort to support the local community, we will enjoy breakfast and lunch prepared by them.

To ensure a seamless experience, we kindly request payment to be made 7 to 10 days prior to the tour date. This allows us to arrange suitable transportation for the entire group.

For the price of 1050 Mexican Pesos, you will receive transportation for the group, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance to the sanctuary, a guided forest walk lasting approximately 1.5 hours, and bilingual explanations (in Spanish and English) provided by a certified guide.
