If by writing system you mean orthography or grammar rules , the brain will understand it all by itself without having to learn every rule. If you have enough material to emerge yourself in a language ( films and TV shows, books, news and magazines ect ...) I think that is possible. It will not be perfect, but probably good enough to understand and be understood by the people in the country.

    So in the long run, it will take more effort to learn the language without understanding the rules behind the language than using grammar and orthography rules as helping guidelines.
