I am working on learning Romanian and noticed that there are no definite articles before words, but I read somewhere that the definite article is attached to the end of the word. Is this true?

Yes, that is correct. There may be exceptions to the following rules:

MASCULINE

un băiat, niște băieți = a boy, some boys (indefinite articles masc sg, the plural form ”niște” is the same for masc/fem)
băiatul, băieții = the boy, the boys (-ul masc sg, +i at pl)

Confusing even for romanians: un copil, doi copii, copiii = a child, two children, the children [copiii = ”copi” (root) + -i (plural ending)    + -i (definite article)]

FEMININE

o fată, niște fete = a girl, some girls (fem sg, pl)
fata, fetele = the girl (change ă to -a at fem sg, add -le to pl)

NEUTRAL

Varies according to the masculine/feminine version of the sg/pl form. They are identical to the ones described above.
