Could anybody explain to me why in every Hebrew text with a pronunciation next to it (not IPA), the 'i' (IPA) sound is always written as 'iy'
I was thinking maybe for English speakers to differentiate from 'i'='aj'?
Thanks in advance! :)

omribNovember 2020 I'm not familiar with this convention. Do you have an example? I can think of situations where the transliteration would have YI (not IY). For example the word "Israel" in Hebrew would be transliterated as "Yisrael" to show that there is a Y sound and an I vowel on it. But if you have an example of IY that would help. |
