”to drive up” is a phrasal verb which is literal in meaning.

”to drive” - this is the action of controlling your car when it is in motion.

The reason why you use ”up” with ”to drive” is because when you are driving in this case, you are going from a lower -> higher elevation/height. For example, you might be going from the beach somewhere on the mountains.

Similarly, we could use ”to drive down”, e.g. ”Let’s drive down to the river” if you were at the top of the mountain in your car and the river is below you. In this case, you are going from higher -> lower height/elevation.

Lets drive up to the mountain means lets drive straight towards the direction of the mountain. It does not literally mean in all cases that the mountain is the final destination but the mountain they stands as a bridge .Maybe the final destination is beyond the mountain
