To last into

Good morning to anyone,

Could anyone explain me what the expression "to last into" means?

Here's some context (a sentence taken from the public abstract of a report about the new covid-19 coronavirus).

"Under current critical care capacities, however, the overall duration of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic could last into 2022, requiring social distancing measures to be in place between 25% ... and 75% ... of that time. ".

Ricky:

The answer to your question is contained in your example, i.e., "...overall duration of ... could last into 2022."

The phrase "to last into" means, essentially, the duration of a phenomenon, i.e., for what length of time it persists, thus, it's duration. Think of it as having the same meaning as "continues" or "continue into", e.g., "the economic impact of the CV-19 pandemic will continue into 2022."

Does this make sense to you?
