This phrase, rendered into English, is tricky. A very (very) "colloquial" expression, in English, that "gets at" the French expression ”prêcher le faux pour savoir le vrai" is "By hook or crook.". However, even this is not a perfectly accurate reflection of the French expression, the meaning of which is much more subtle and atthe same time more deliberate.
I'll ponder this question a bit more and return to this post later today.
