Momentum is indeed a physics term, but it is commonly applied in everyday language.

Momentum when used in everyday speech is best defined as energy accumulated through movement.

When we speak of a political movement, we might say that it is gaining (or losing) momentum to indicate that its popularity is rising (or falling).
