Holiday is something that we celebrate, Vacation on the other hand is something we don't exactly celebrate but take for an extended period of time.

A vacation is when someone takes a certain amount of time off from work to relax. This is usually accompanied by flying to a foreign country and drinking a lot of wine. A holiday is a vacation but for everyone.
