A relative pronoun is like a pointer to a subject or an object in a sentence and acts like a placeholder. In the following sentence are three relative pronouns:
The stone, which was thrown by the man, who ran away, flew into the glass window, that broke apart.

The three relative pronouns which, who, and that share their common feature of introducing a subsentence. Two of them are also interrogative pronouns, one a demonstrative pronoun also.
