Can you translate ”étudier” in French by ”work” in English?

In French we can say: "Je travaille (j'étudie) pour préparer mon examen". can you say : "I'am working to prepare my exam" ?

"I am studying for my exam" or "I'm preparing for my exam" or something specific like " I am working on algebra to prepare for the exam" - these are more common.

Yep. You also can say: "I'm preparing my exam."
