![]() | kso89April 2017 "While" refers to a period of time in which an action is being performed. "When" refers to a specific time or moment--it lacks the idea of a continual action. Writing a letter takes minutes (even hours), and during that period of time in which you were writing, the phone rang. The phone ringing happened in a moment--one second it wasn't ringing, then, all of a sudden, it started. The start of the ringing could be placed at a specific time--say, eight o'clock. Now, if you had ignored the phone and just let it go on ringing and ringing, when a knock came at the door, you could say: While the phone was ringing, someone knocked on the door. Make sense? |
