To "linger" means to stay somewhere longer than expected or usual, often because of uncertainty or reluctance or something like that.

Ex: "Even though it was already dark, he lingered outside because he hated to leave the fresh air."

or, "After she left the room, the smell of her perfume still lingered in the air".

You could use it in this way, too: "They had expected the sick man to die in the night, but the morning found him still lingering."
