  • World War I

    • In the beginning of the twentieth century, the United States decided to enter into World War I alongside the allies in order to fight against the German Empire.
    • Meanwhile, the general secretary of the American Socialist party, known as Schenck, mailed flyers to draftees.
    • The circulars aimed to cause insubordination within the American forces, as it suggested that war is despotism which only serves the interest of capitalism.
    • The said circulars exhorted to not submit to intimidation and to remind that everyone can be opposed to the draft.
    • As a result, Schenck was convicted on the basis on the Espionage Act for having conspired against the United States by attempting to cause insubordination in the military forces and to obstruct it recruitment.
