A Tree with a Russian Soul
- Which tree is the most widespread in your area?
- In Russia in general such tree is birch.
- Although in my enclave region oaks and chestnuts are more widespread.
- Actually, birches in old times took an important place in life of Slavic peoples.
- Birch bark was used for writing, also from it were made different kind of utensils, for example such as ladles and baskets, besides from Birch bark were made bast shoes - the simplest shoes, which the peasants were wearing even in the 20th century.
- The best firewood is also from birch - they burn for long and give a lot of warmth.
- Brooms for bath is often made from birch, although oaks brooms is also good, but not everywhere in main part of Russia is easy to find oak trees.
- By the way, in spring from birch are getting birch sap, a way of getting which is similar with obtaining maple sap.
- Birch tar is also popular in different spheres, especially in medicine and cosmetology.
- Russian writers and poets often chanted birch as symbol, as melancholy soul of Russians.
- Even the whole image of birch reflects the Russian soul - drooping thin branches swaying obediently in the wind, so and Russians, especially peasants, meekly bear their heavy lot.
- Lots of that I wrote about, sunk into oblivion, left in the past - and bast shoes, and peasants, although the love to this melancholy, Russian soul like, tree is still in our hearts as birch firewood in our stoves and birch broom in our bathhouses.
