    • Why would people lie for social dignity

  • I watched a short video a few days ago and the guy in the video mentioned the concept of social dignity while explaining why people would lie.
    • As social life usually revolves around superficial but routinary courtesy, details of unpleasant matters in people’s personal lives aren‘t expected to be brought up.
  • Otherwise, it might harm your social dignity, because revealing negative aspects in your life might leave an impression of untrustworthiness.
    • This is probably an unspoken rule for socializing with people in many cultures, though exceptions exist; and also a trait I have observed in my colleagues and acquaintances.
    • It helps stop prying eyes and malicious gossips by setting boundaries to a degree.
    • In a utilitarian sense, maintaining a positive profile helps develop interpersonal network, as it hints one is able to provide a certain form of value and is independently liable for his/her own feelings or affairs.
  • That might be why people comply with this social code subconsciously.
    • It’s a proof for adulthood.
    • As I sit here reflecting on this concept, its implication, its connection with the secular property of the world we live in, and maybe potential objections to the idea, it strikes me that socializing with people never pertains to only one rule.
    • Except trying not bringing up experiences that might sabotage your social image, honesty and the courage to reveal the truths (especially the negative ones) is what makes people relatable.
  • But why don’t people do it anyway, every day?
    • I guess truth can be hurtful and sometimes people just are not able to follow through to amend the consequential issues.
