    • Colors of Autumn

  • We are on the wave of golden autumn now.
    • This year it accompany by the bright sun and blue sky which be given us by anticyclone following one after another.
    • My favourite activity in this beautiful period is cycling by the bicycle path which are surrounded with all the colors of autumn.
    • Sitting under a big yellow maple tree I’m wondering why some trees like more yellow and red outfit, while the other prefer to shed leaves green?
    • I noticed that especially bright flare up maples - they are the most saturated colors, mostly deep yellow.
    • Also birches, rowan and oaks give us bright shades, the first one are usually yellow, rowan is red and oaks are often fulvous and reddish.
    • At the same time an alder is covering my garden with its still green leaves.
    • First of all, leaves change its color as a reaction to decreasing daylight hours and colder temperatures.
    • For the production of chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color of the leaves, trees need lots of light and warm.
    • When autumn brings short and cool days, the productions of chlorophyll is slows down and the existing one is decomposing.
    • As a result the other pigments begin to prevail and determine the color of leaves.
    • If the leaf cells contain a large amount of yellow pigments - carotenoids, then they give yellow or orange coloring.
    • If carotenoids content is low and days are sunny and nights are cool (not cold), then leaves are coloring in red due to accumulation in leaf cells red pigments - anthocyanins.
    • Besides some trees color is fixed as a taxonomic feature.
    • What about an alder, it continues photosynthesis longer then other thanks to a cohabitation with special bacteria which retain nitrogen.
    • So alder no need to save stock up on nutrients , so its vegetation period is longer...
    • So found the answer I hasten to continue my way through the autumn path.
