The Ornitalogical Station ”Fringilla”

• Have you ever seen a kind of a bracelet on a leg of a bird?

• This is a bird ringing.

• Birds are ringing with the purpose of researching of features their migration.

• Through the Curonian Spit, which is in Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic sea run ways of lots bird’s migration.

• In an autumn here can fly by about a million bird.

• So in 1901 on the Curonian Spit in a village Rossiten was created the first ornithological station in the world.

• It existed until 1944, until the war drove it out of here.

• Later in 1956-57 in its place was based biological station and field station ”Fringilla” which are still there and open for visiting.

• ”Fringilla” is Latin name of one of the most popular bird on the Curonian Spit - a chaffinch.

• The station learns migrations, nesting biology and dispersion of birds.

• Fields season lasts from 1st April till 1st November.

• In its period through special traps passes several hundred birds per day, sometimes even thousands.

• Here are located one of the highest traps - huge funnels 15×30×70 m, at the end of the traps there is a small enclosure where from ornithologists catch birds.

• An ornithologist write down bird’s parameters such as its weight, dimension, amount of fat reserves and so on, then ringing a bird and released.

• The bird’s rings are a special very light ones, which contains some information in a special base.

• Ornithological stations exchange data, making migration maps and research other bird’s behavioral features.

• It is an interesting place which any (unfortunately too much in last time) could visit with a special excursion.
