Nineteenth century restorations
- This document is an article from David Bonsord.
- The author aims at showing that three paintings of the National Gallery were damaged by a former restoration, during [pas « in »] the nineteenth century : The Sultan Mehmet II by Bellini, The Virgin and Child with Saint George and Saint Anthony Abbot by Pisanello, and The Virgin and Child Embracing by Sassoferrato.
- They were acquired by Sir Eastlake for the museum.
- He asked an italian restorer to work on the two first canvas.
- But this man repainted those almost entirely : only a few original pieces of canvas still remain !
- About the last painting, the author explains that there are excessive overpaintings in the canvas, put during the restoration.
