Was Julia happy in marriage?

• Many people think that a long and happy marriage is kind of art.

• The author William Somerset Maugham tried to demonstrate us his view of this rather controversial subject in his novel “Theatre”.

• So, let us talk about the main characters Julia Lambert and her husband Michael Gosselin.

• At the beginning of the novel the writer describes Julia Lambert as an actress who has achieved everything she could only wish of.

• She is the most famous actress of England, talented and rich woman.

• Her love story with Michael Gosselin have started when they were quite young.

• She met her future husband at the theatre those days he was incredibly handsome, but unfortunately, talentless as an actor.

• Julia fell in love with him at the first sight, but could not achieve reciprocal love at that moment.

• But then, their relationship became quite serious and, eventually, they were married.

• Many years later, Julia became a bit disillusioned with Michael who has already turned into a director of a theatre, though he was a good business partner for her.

• In my opinion, she overthought, and perhaps she just was very bored.

• Julia as all the creative personalities needed the inspiration and wanted to be loved, so she dissolved completely in a young lover accountant Thomas.

• She saw him as a young and ambitious youth .

• The woman even helped him in every possible way with money and tried to accustom him to secular society so that he didn’t leave her.

• And I only can suppose that she was playing the happiness that period, because Thomas was using her for his own purposes but she couldn’t do anything.

• At some point, the middle-aged woman realized that her behaviour was very stupid and incorrect after she took revenge on him, she into the family nest.

• She does not receive love from her husband.

• She wants some new sensations and emotions.

• I believe that only the scene brought her happiness and she was really happy here.

• I even can say metaphorically she was happy married with the theatre.
