Beartown
- The book I have been reading is “Beartown” by Swedish author Fredrik Backman.
- The story takes place in a provincial Swedish town called Bjornstad.
- The thing which unites all the people living in the town is hockey.
- Every game of a local youth team becomes the most important event in Bjornstad’s life.
- The young players have real chances to win the championship, which has never happened before.
- This fact just increases already enormous attention to the game among the inhabitants of this town.
- Subsequently, the team won the semifinal and it created an incredible festive atmosphere in Bjornstad.
- Not only did this win make everyone happy, but it also triggered events which have led to a crime committed by the team’s best player.
- That day changed everything: it divided best friends and made local dwellers vent their spite on the victim who put the local star’s career in danger.
- The theme “we can’t protect our children” runs through the whole book.
- In my opinion, it reflects author’s own concerns.
- Howsoever you try to teach and understand your children, they live their own lives and are able to commit acts hardly understandable to their parents.
