'La Mort des bois'
- What time is it?
- I cannot (sleep/fall asleep).
- If I could move, I would toss and turn in all directions.
- I (limit myself to/do little more than) open and close my hand, nervously.
- Yvette put me to bed at around 10 in the evening.
- I have the impression it is at least 2 in the morning.
- It’s impossible to get a wink of sleep.
- If Tony Mercier came to live here, he must have settled under (some/any) identity.
- He did not arrive (disguised/dressed up) as Captaint Yssart.
- He must have first (settled/moved in), then (set/begun) to kill, and then decided to take (on) Yssart’s identity.
- And why kill Migoin? Why not Paul?
- It seems to me that, if I were a (mentally-ill person/madman/maniac) mad with jealousy, I would (make sure that/see it to that) it were my ex-wife’s husband who was charged with murder instead of such a good chap as Stéphane...
- Unless: 1) Stéphane had not had any suspicions towards me, or 2) Stéphane were my ex-wife’s lover… unless Stéphane had been Hélène’s lover...
- There’s who opens up new perspectives...
- We could even consider a combination of hypotheses 1 and 2.
- And to think that I was even suspecting (of) my best girlfriend’s husband and my loyal governess’s fiancé!
- Paul Fansten and Jean Guillaume. And Sophie?
- [What does Sophie’s (corpse/body) have to do with all that/How is Sophie’s (corpse/body) related to all that]?
- Was is an actual suicide?
- For such (trivial/commonplace/mundane) reasons as adultery?
- (An argument/A quarrel) with Manu?
- Or has Tony killed Stéphanie as well in order to increase the weight of the charges against Stéphane?
- Can a (mad/crazy) (escapee/fugitive) be this Machiavellian?
- The answer: yes.
- Otherwise, he would not have been able to (assume/take on) the captain’s identity.
- On the other hand, as Gassi said, even if he had been innocent, with the past (with which he went by/he had on his shoulders), he would not have (had)/(stood a chance/any chance).
- And what if it was not him who had committed (the murder of Marseilles/Marseilles murder)?
- Why move in here?
- Why (disguise [yourself/himself/themself]/dress up) as a captain?
- No, it has to be him: there is no other reasonable explanation.
- I persist to see bubbles in still water.
- But still: why has nobody suspected it (since/from) the beginning?
- After all, to know (the mother-in-law of one of the victims/one of the victims’ mother-in-law) (has) lived with a (killer/murderer)...
- No, I am stupid.
- They do not know it: Hélène had not talked about Tony with anybody, and yet she did not manage to guess he had run away from the hospital.
- She thought he was locked (up/away).
- There is no reason to stir (up) all this mud.
- “The weather is (splendid/perfect)!” Yvette exclaims as she opens the shutters.
- “I don’t remember falling asleep.
- I have the impression I dreamt (the whole night/all night long).”
