Abstract Sharing Economy
- The Sharing Economy is a topic that has been attracting a great deal of attention lately.
- When it comes to vacation rentals, like Airbnb, or transportation solutions like Uber, startups pick up the collaborative model and consumers embrace the age old “sharing is caring” philosophy.
- This master’s thesis examines the acceptance and potential of the sharing economy with focus on the home and car sharing industry.
- In order to gain a deeper insight into the sharing economy topic, the conceptual and economical principals will be described in detail.
- In addition, preliminary to the quantitative study, the core concepts of acceptance research methods will be evaluated.
- Whilst analyzing the business model of Airbnb and Uber, the SWOT-analysis will give indications about the future potential of those companies and also the overall industry.
- Amongst others, the advancing digitalization enables sharing economy companies being able to offer a fast, on-demand and convenient opportunity to share personal belongings with strangers.
- Also increasing ecological awareness leads more and more people to share resources versus to own and underutilize.
- The quantitative study was carried out via an online-survey with 110 participants.
- Within the survey the aim is to clarify if there is already a broader acceptance and how this varies between different sociodemographic characteristics by using mainly contingency tables.
- This can be used to draw conclusions about the different user typologies using sharing economy.
- One of the key findings is that although the actual usage of sharing economy services is still quite low the indices show a broad acceptance.
- In addition, the study can be used to gain insights into recommendations for future developments and research focus.
