  • We all live in a mobile-first world spending more time than ever on our digital devices.
  • There's no doubt that smartphones made our lives easier in many ways and I can't deny the necessity of many useful applications.
  • Moreover, I really like an idea of social media as it's the easiest way to keep in touch with many friends.
    • BUT if you are checking your Instagram or Whatsapp like every 15 minutes or spending all evening with YouTube and Facebook, I have bad news for you.
    • Maybe you even didn't notice that much, but you became smartphone addicted.
    • I know what I am talking about as I catch myself on this bad habit sometimes but much less then I used to do before.
  • First, few words about why we do this and why this is a problem.
  • The first reason for checking social media is a well-known FOMO - Fear of Missing Out.
    • This term is about fear to miss out something interesting that is going now without you.
    • That's why you check all these Insta stories and Whatsapp chats while almost always there is nothing so important there and we know this.
    • And the second reason is a dopamine (the pleasure hormone) effect that we have from getting likes or new messages.
    • Actually it's not the best way to get this feeling and the truth is that this addiction makes you lose concentration, doesn't allow you to be productive and prevents living fulfilling life.
    • I want to share with you some tips that can help to do a Digital Detox (temporary reducing of using devices): 1.
    • Switch off all application notifications This is crazy to be distracted every time when someone decided to "go live" with Instagram or shared funny picture in your friends chat.
  • Just be ruthless with all incoming notifications as this is your precious time.
    • Is it really important so much to watch how that friend of your friend is eating burger right now?
    • I turned off all these alerts about year ago and feel much better without them. 2.
    • Schedule phone-free time during the day You need to allocate some time slots when you are absolutely free from checking any applications.
  • Don't worry, as if something’s urgent, people can still reach you by calling you and your messages are not going anywhere.
    • Instead of this, you can spend this time for something that really matters. 3.
    • Organize an unloading day Choose the day when you actually can do this and switch your phone to "airplane mode" to enjoy the silence.
  • First of all, you can understand during the day how much you are addicted.
  • And then you feel how your mind gets clear.
    • During one of my 10-days vacation I used my phone only once per day no longer for 30 minutes.
  • Looking back I understand that this is an awesome experience.
  • A digital detox is all about being present in the moment so just leave your phone, look around and enjoy.
