The Marathon des Sables
- The Marathon des Sables, also known as the toughest running event in the world, takes place in the Moroccan part of the Sahara Desert for over 250 kilometres.
- It lasts six days and includes five gruelling stops in the sunshine hot enough to fry eggs, among sand dunes.
- It is really a physical challenge in which 1200 athletes compete against each other.
- Winner of the 32nd edition, which has just finished, has been the Moroccan Rachid el Morabity, who had won some of the past editions.
- Usually, the African runners, accustomed to high temperatures and trained in extreme conditions, prevail.
- However, this time the women’s race was won by a Swede, Ms. Elisabeth Barnes.
- The first “Sand Marathon” took place in 1986.
- This event has become more and more popular ever since, and appealed to a lot of athletes willing to prove themselves.
- Not only do they face the burning sun but also, they have to carry supplies such as food, water, and whatever they need to sleep, increasing their physical effort.
- They carry a load of almost 15 kg, but luckily, many promoters make them available to some water along the path, every ten kilometres.
- The risk of dehydrating and succumbing to physical exertion is around the corner
