  • CELTA application form, part 1

  • (Answering questions) 1.
    • LEARNING How would you characterize yourself as a learner?
    • “People always forget your words but never forget how you made them feel”.
    • That quote precisely describes me as a learner.
    • I’m the brightest example of a kinesthetic person you can ever meet.
    • If I don’t understand why do I need to learn something, it is very hard for me to do it.
    • But if I have clear goals and motivations, it always works.
    • I always ask lots of questions as well.
    • What is your preferred learning style?
    • For example: 1.
    • Watch it done and copy it. 2.
  • Read the theory of it and try to apply it. 3.
  • Try it out and get feedback on it. 4.
  • Work it out for yourself. 5.
    • Or …try everything written above together + make my subject a part of everyday life (for example reading books and watching movies in language that I study, hanging sheets/pictures/schemes on the walls etc.) 2.
  • TEACHING Answer the following in 2 or 3 sentences: How would you get students talking in class?
  • The best way to get students talking is to give them an extremely controversial topic to discuss.
  • It also depends on the age of learners – for instance, children would prefer talking about themselves, teenager, adolescents would love to talk about something-for-young-people-only (specific music styles, clothes, TV series, love stories, celebrities etc.) But it’s crucially important not only to talk about things like that but also to bring up some values and to share with them something that could help them in future through the lesson materials.
    • In a nutshell – to be an equal friend to a student and to look through wow-topics which is impossible not to talk about.
  • What are some of the reasons for and against teaching grammar rules?
  • FOR: - Certainly, grammar is a foundation for learning language so it’s impossible to reach high levels without strong grammar knowledge.
    • It’s extremely important to develop vocabulary, speaking and listening skills but without grammar it works just like body without skeleton.
  • AGAINST: -Sometimes it could get really boring and frustrating for learners.
    • If they don’t get a grammar rule, sometimes they feel upset and loose motivation.
  • How important is listening and reading when learning a foreign language?
    • As I told earlier, grammar is important, but imagine yourself in the foreign country.
  • What will help you more – understanding of direction given you by stranger and understanding of the medical instruction or knowledge about using Past Perfect Continuous?
  • All of those skills should be developed carefully and evenly cause they are necessary parts of a very complicated mechanism.
  • Our body will never work with perfectly developed kidneys but without liver at all.
  • So with learning it is just the same.
  • What is a good way of teaching vocabulary?
  • Reading, watching movies, using stickers and cards could be the good option.
  • As only you meet a new word, try to use it as often as you can (making up sentences, using it in conversations, etc.) What are the main reasons for and against correcting students’ mistakes?
  • FOR: Unless you know about your mistake, you won’t correct it.
  • Checking your mistakes shows you the field of growth and let you know what topic you should look through one more time.
  • And you will never learn to fly unless you’re stuck in the same swamp.
  • AGAINST: One of the most important teacher’s goals is to make people talk.
  • Usually they are afraid to start because they don’t want to look stupid, and pointing on their mistakes is just an exaggeration of their stupidity (from their point of view, of cause).
  • So it can cause self-doubts and frustration in learners.
  • That’s why it’s extremely important to keep balance and to give students delicate feedbacks.
  • And, of cause, to appreciate their progress. 3.
  • THE TEACHER Why do you think you are suited to language teaching?
  • Being an empathetic person is a tool, which really helps me to work with people.
  • Teachers from Czech Republic told that I was quite good at keeping the audience’s attention.
  • I am a patient and cheerful person and I always try to do my best.
  • I am very frank but not too much so that’s why it was always easy for me to communicate with people of any age.
