**First opportunity to cool off in a mountain river this summer

Embark on a picturesque journey through the Great Bamboo Forest of Kyoto, the historic streets of Saga Toriimoto, and the lush Hozukyo Canyon, culminating in a refreshing dip (or a relaxing feet soak) in the Katsura River on a sunny summer day!

This leisurely 6.5km hike offers stunning views of Kyoto's Hozukyo Canyon, a chance to paddle in the Katsura River (swimming is optional but be cautious of the current), an encounter with Japan's charming Tanuki statues, and more.

The hike includes an 800-meter ascent to Rokucho-Toge Pass through a forest, followed by a steep descent into Hozukyo. The remainder of the trek is mostly flat, with paved roads for ease of walking.

Please bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes, sunscreen, ample water, a bento lunch, a blue tarp for a picnic, and swimwear if you wish to enjoy the river.

THE PLAN:
10:45-11:05 - Meet at Shin-Osaka Station outside the Midosuji Line Subway Gates
11:05-11:15 - Take JR Line train to Kyoto
11:20 - Depart from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto
11:44-11:52- Transfer to Sagano Line at Kyoto Station (track 2 to track 33)
11:57 - Depart from Kyoto to Saga-Arashiyama
12:18-12:30 - Arrive at Hozukyo Station, take photos, and use facilities
12:30-1:00 - Walk to Hozukyo Torokko Station for a Tanuki statue photo op
1:00-1:15 - Capture moments with the Tanuki statues
1:15-1:30 - Walk to lunch spot on Kiyotaki trail by the river
1:30-3:00 - Lunch and river swimming
3:00-4:45 - Hike to Saga Toriimoto, through the Bamboo forest, concluding at Saga-Arashiyama Station
4:57 - Return train to Kyoto
5:29 - Fastest connection to Shin-Osaka
5:52 - Arrival at Shin-Osaka, Otsukaresama
