How to learn English easily by yourself

Contrary to a popular belief, it is possible to learn a new language on your own. Here is a method that can also be applied to any other language.
As you'll see, this isn't rocket science. It's mostly a matter of common sense and doesn't require a lot of work.

To start with, it's important to work on the state of mind required to learn a new language. Indeed, when it comes to learning a language, the popular belief is that it's a lot of work. Actually, it's not necessary to work much. Just a few minutes a day can be enough.
You'll understand that learning a language is more a matter of patience than effort. To "speak" a foreign language actually requires four different skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading comprehension.

Try to diversify the exercises to make your learning less monotonous and develop the different skills.
Here is a list of exercises you can do:

- Make a grammar lesson
- Read a daily Internet newspaper article
- Watch the news on the Internet
- Watch movies and series in the original version. First with subtitles, then without
- Watch the latest learning English videos proposed by Polyglot Club
- Find Internet song lyrics that you like and try to translate them
- Meet native English speakers. As an added benefit, you will make new friends. See the list of upcoming polyglot events in France
- Read books. It is important to improve your vocabulary and construct better grammatical structures
- Write a text in English and have it corrected by English speakers. Use the Polyglot Club Correction tool. Submit a new text in English here
Language learners are often attracted to a country. Read the newspapers of this country, watch news programs and learn the culture.

If you have hobbies or interests, surf the net in the language concerned; you will learn much faster without even realizing it.

Start reading books in English as soon as you can. It's a very powerful way forward.
If possible, try to make friends who speak several languages in order to discuss the subject with them. It might not appear so, but learning languages is a hobby in itself. Once you have some basics it is important to meet people in the language concerned.
The PolyglotClub community will help you to make friends while learning languages:
- Find friends online
- Ask questions
- go on vacation in a foreign country and meet members around the world, or attend events in your area
To conclude:
Learning a language should be fun. That's not always the case with the teaching methods used in school.
So if you're curious and like to travel, get started: the world is waiting for you!
