Well, first IUFM shouldn't be labelled higher education, I  know what i'm talking about (without stating that i've been in higher education for years)  and  think true research shouldn't be debased by comparing it to IUFM ramblings...

then, are there any differences between polyglot and konversando for example, another structure which enables you to meet people from "different walks of life", in fact expats so full of themselves that they are desperately boring?

I thought polyglot was a way to find penpals, that's what i was looking for, not evening  outings on weekdays.

Assessing or acknowledging benevolently the diversity of people is in fact reducing them to the characteristics that make them stand out from the crowd or majority.

So there will be a postman, a carpenter, a teacher, a Colombian student, a trendy wannabe journalist at the next meeting..........

Sorry to be sarcastic, I'm sure what you do may be of interest to some people but since polyglot  has turned out to be the epitome of things that irk  me on the net, I wanted to add this last post.

tell me would you find interesting talking to a Pakistani man if he was the man serving you at the supermarket or at a Cuban if he was undocumented, working in the construction and almost illiterate?

these are different walks of life...

Isadora,

Thank you for using the Polyglot Services, and for your constructive comments.

First off, Polyglot is dedicated to foreign language/cultural exchanges. We do party, go out, drink and dance, but it is always with those basic linguistic and cultural principles in mind. We strongly encourage you to participate in our weekly Polyglot Meetings, every Tuesday and Thursday, or in any other event, year round. You will understand right away what we are about =)

Besides, you can always find English native or non-native speakers to practice your English with. This week alone, I have met a Canadian, an English, an American, and a couple Indians at our Tuesday Polyglot Meeting.

And coming to the event mentioned above, I know what you mean by 'philosophical musing', or IUFM lecture. I have spent enough time in French higher education institutions to feel JUST the way you do. I have the priviledge to organize this gathering, and I will also be moderating the debate. Trust me, that night, there will be lots of opportunities for exchanges, because that dinner is geared more towards exchanging and contributing ideas, than merely lecturing an otherwise apathetic audience.

The idea is to briefly introduce the topic, then quickly open the floor to all the participants. This will be achieved in the form of  group exercises and joint reflections upon different models of communications that have evolved in the past 50 years. Therefore, the idea is to gather individuals from ALL ethnic origins and walks of life, because ultimately, we will all be contributing, as well as taking advantage of that diversity of backgrounds and views.

Hope to see you soon, Isadora!

Hello Isadora,

Thanks for those questions.

Polyglot allows you to practice all languages.

Either you contact members one by one :

When you contact someone check his/her last connection date to see if that member is still active.

Also, if you are looking for native English speakers in Paris ready to exchange with French, it can be harder because the native English speakers have a lot of choice. As far as I am concerned, I have found penpals to exchange Chinese without any problems ... Also it's a question of motivation.

Either during meetings/gatherings :

During those events you have no problem practicing your English ...

All you need to know about Polyglot aims and philosophy ... https://polyglotclub.com/faq/?q=cat-view& category=Polyglot

this seems a philosophical musing to me... it also sounds like a IUFM talk...

how are you going to contribute to this meeting?

Frankly, I've been posting ads to find people to practice my English and noone has ever answered me so is polyglot a kind of club for people who like to party or a means to speak and write different languages?

Irene.
