When use: Quand or Quant? Ou or Où? a or à?
When use "Quand" with a D and "Quant" with a T in French?
Quand VS quant in French polyglotclub wiki 2.jpg

Quand utiliser « quand » ou « quant » ? (When to use "quand" or "quant"?)

Je pense que cette question est importante. Quant à vous ? (I think this question is important. As for you?)

Two words that are often confused

How many times do we see written: « quand à votre commande, nous n’en avons aucune trace » instead of the correct form: « quant à votre commande, nous n’en avons aucune trace »? (about your order, we have no record)

How to choose between "quand" and "quant":

If it can be replaced with "when", it's "quand". Otherwise, use "quant" meaning "with respect, about, as for".

Thus, differentiate « quand il fait beau, je mets un t-shirt » (When the weather is nice, I wear a tee-shirt) and « quant aux shorts, je n’en porte qu’en été » (As for shorts, I only wear them in the summer time).

(When the weather is nice, I wear shorts)

but

(As for shorts, I wear them in the summer time)

Of course, we write « quand » in « Quand portes-tu des shorts ? » (When are you wearing shorts?).

N.B. do not confuse these two words with « qu’en » contraction « que en » like in « qu'en penses-tu ? » (What do you think about it?)

Examples

Practice the writing of the following sentences :

Quand:

  1. Quand est-ce que nous mangeons? (When are we eating?)
  2. Quand je suis arrivé, il dormait. (When I arrived, he was sleeping.)
(When I finished, I went home.)
(When it will be nice, we'll go to the beach.)
  5. Quand tu seras prêt, appelle-moi. (When you're ready, call me.)

Quant:

  1. Quant à moi, je suis d'accord. (As for me, I agree.)
  2. Quant à son avenir, il est incertain. (As for his future, it's uncertain.)
  3. Quant à vous, comment ça va? (As for you, how are you?)
(As for my opinion, I think he's wrong.)
(As for what will happen tomorrow, nobody knows.)
