Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn useful vocabulary related to directions and locations in Central Kurdish. Being able to ask for and give directions is an essential skill when traveling to a new place or navigating an unfamiliar area. This lesson will also help you discuss the location of various places and landmarks in the Kurdish language.

Asking for Directions

When you are lost or need help finding a place, it's important to be able to ask for directions. Here are some common phrases you can use in Central Kurdish:

  • لە کوێ ئەتەوێ بوون؟ (Le kû êtewey bûn?) - Where are you coming from?
  • لە کوێ دەرەوە؟ (Le kû derewa?) - Where are you going?
  • چەند لەوو بەرەوەیی رێیەکت نییە؟ (Chand lawe bêrewaîyî reyeket nîye?) - Do you know the way to (place)?
  • ئەو بەرەوەی دەستبەخە؟ (Ew berewey destbexê?) - Is (place) nearby?

Giving Directions

When someone asks you for directions, you can use the following phrases to help them out:

  • بەمڕۆژئاوەی نزمانەوە (Be merrojaawey nazmane) - Turn left
  • بەمڕۆژئاوەی ڕاست (Be merrojaawey rast) - Turn right
  • بەدەم، ژێرەوە کەوە، بەلى بچەروە (Bedem, Jêrewêkewê, Bely Bcêrowe)- Go straight, Turn left, Turn right (In order)
  • هیوادارە (Hewadarê) - Be careful
  • ئەو بەرەوەی لە چ ناوچەیە؟ (Ew berewey li çî navçeyê?) - Which street is (place) on?

Asking About Location

If you are trying to get a sense of where you are or where something is located, you can use the following phrases in Central Kurdish:

  • ئەم بەرەوەیە کەلێر ئەستێرە؟ (Em bereweya kelêr astro?) - Is this place to the left or right?
  • لە کوێ بەرەوەندەبوون؟ (Le kû bereweyandêbûn?) - Where is the location?
  • ئەو بەرەوەی کە بۆمان زرینۆزیکرابووە؟ (Ew bereweyke kê bo Man Zarînûzykirabûwe?) - Where is the place that was mentioned for us?
