Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn about the months of the year and the different seasons in Cebuano. You will practice using them in sentences to talk about events and weather. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to express yourself more confidently in Cebuano and have a better understanding of Cebuano culture.

Months of the Year

In Cebuano, the months of the year are:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
Enero Eh-NEH-roh January
Pebrero Peh-BREH-roh February
Marso MAHR-soh March
Abril AH-brihl April
Mayo MAH-yoh May
Hunyo Hoo-NYOH June
Hulyo Hoo-LYOH July
Agosto Ah-GOHS-toh August
Setyembre Seh-TYEM-breh September
Oktubre Ohk-TOO-breh October
Nobyembre Noh-BYEM-breh November
Disyembre Dees-YEM-breh December

To use these words in a sentence, you can simply say, for example, "Ako birthday kay sa Pebrero." (My birthday is in February.)

Seasons

In Cebuano, there are two main seasons: tag-init and tag-ulan.

Tag-init is the season of summer or dry season that begins around March and lasts until May. During this season, the weather is hot and humid, and rain is sparse. The beaches are popular during this season, especially during Holy Week.

Tag-ulan is the season of rainy or wet season that begins around June and lasts until November. During this season, the weather is cooler and wetter due to the monsoon winds. Rainfall is abundant and frequent during this season, and floods and landslides are common in some areas. It is important to always be prepared during typhoon season.

There is also a third season that is unique to Cebu: tag-kinaiya. This season is characterized by cold and breezy weather, especially during the early morning and evening. This season usually starts around December and lasts until February.

To use these words in a sentence, you can say, for example, "Unsay mahitabo sa tag-ulan?" (What happens during the rainy season?) or "Ganahan ako sa tag-init kay makaadto ko sa baybayon." (I like summer because I can go to the beach.)

Practice Sentences

Here are some sentences that you can use to practice using the months and seasons in Cebuano:

  • Tag-ulan na, dali padung sa balay. (It's the rainy season, hurry home.)
