Introduction[edit | edit source]

Welcome to the Cebuano Grammar lesson on Yes/No Questions! In this lesson, we will learn how to form yes/no questions in Cebuano by using the word "ba." Asking and answering questions is an essential part of any language, and it allows us to engage in meaningful conversations. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently ask and answer yes/no questions in Cebuano.

Forming Yes/No Questions with "Ba"[edit | edit source]

In Cebuano, we can easily turn a statement into a yes/no question by adding the word "ba" at the end of the sentence. The word "ba" acts as a question marker and indicates that the sentence is a question. Let's look at some examples:

  • Statement: "Nagkaon ko." (I ate.)
  • Yes/No Question: "Nagkaon ko ba?" (Did I eat?)
  • Statement: "Gikan ka?" (Are you from here?)
  • Yes/No Question: "Gikan ka ba?" (Are you from here?)
  • Statement: "Ganahan ka sa pagkaon?" (Do you like the food?)
  • Yes/No Question: "Ganahan ka ba sa pagkaon?" (Do you like the food?)

As you can see, by simply adding "ba" at the end of the statement, we can transform it into a yes/no question. It's important to note that the word order remains the same in both statements and questions.

Cultural Insights[edit | edit source]

In Cebuano culture, asking questions is a common way to show interest and engage in conversation. It is considered polite to ask questions to show your curiosity and to get to know someone better. Cebuanos are generally friendly and open to answering questions, so don't hesitate to ask when you're in a conversation with a Cebuano speaker.
