As an Abkhazian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I believe that mastering the comparative and superlative forms of adverbs is crucial for anyone who wants to express themselves accurately and confidently in Abkhazian. In this lesson, we will introduce comparative and superlative forms of adverbs and practice using them to compare and contrast different events and actions.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Questions & Word Order in Abkhazian.

Understanding Comparative and Superlative Forms of Adverbs

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They provide additional information about the intensity, manner, frequency, and time of an action or event. In Abkhazian, adverbs are not declined, and their form does not change according to the noun case or gender. However, adverbs can have comparative and superlative forms that express the degree of intensity or superiority of the action or event they modify.

Comparative adverbs are used to compare two actions or events, while superlative adverbs are used to compare more than two actions or events.

To form a comparative adverb in Abkhazian, we usually add the suffix "-ara" to the base form of the adverb. For example, the adverb "апсныкьабеит" (apsnyk'abeit - slowly) becomes "апсныкьабеитара" (apsnyk'abeitara - more slowly).

To form a superlative adverb, we usually add the suffix "-araшшьы" to the base form of the adverb. For example, the adverb "ашшьагуа" (ash'aguа - loudly) becomes "ашшьагуаарашшьы" (ash'aguаarashch'ы - the most loudly).

Let's look at some examples below:

Abkhazian Pronunciation English
азыркьуа azыrk'ua soon
азыркьуаара azыrk'uaara sooner
азыркьуаарашшьы azыrk'uaarashch'ы the soonest
