What is the Future Tense[edit | edit source]

The Future Tense in Assamese is used to express actions that will occur in the future. In Assamese, the Future tense is formed by adding suffix '-bo' or '-obo' at the end of verbs.

Formation of the Future Tense[edit | edit source]

There are two types of verbs in Assamese: root verbs and derivative verbs. The Future Tense can be formed from both types of verbs.

To form the Future tense of root verbs, suffix '-bo' is added at the end of the verb stem. For example, the root verb 'khao' (eat) will become 'khao-bo' in the Future tense.

Assamese Pronunciation English
খাও-ব khaaw-bo will eat

For derivative verbs, suffix '-obo' is added at the end of the verb stem. For example, the derivative verb 'bolibo' (will say) will remain the same in the Future tense, except for the addition of the suffix '-obo' as shown below.

Assamese Pronunciation English
বলিব-অব bolib-o-bo will say

Examples[edit | edit source]

Let's see some examples to better understand the usage of the Future Tense in Assamese. The first column contains the Assamese sentence, the second column contains the transliteration and the third column contains the English translation.

Assamese Pronunciation English
মই আহিব mui ahhib I will come
তুমি নাওব-অব tumi nao-b-o-bo You will dance
তেওঁ খাওব teu khoaw-b-o He/She will eat
আমি ব্যস্ত হোঁওক ami byostho hoonok I will be busy

Using Adverbs in the Future Tense[edit | edit source]

Adverbs are words that describe verbs by providing more information about the time, manner, place or degree of the verb. Adverbs can be used with the Future Tense in Assamese, and they are placed after the verb.

For example,

Assamese Pronunciation English
মই সকালে আইব mui shokal-e aib I will come in the morning
তুমি খুব ভাল আহাব tumi khub bhal ahhab You will do very well
তেওঁ এইটো খুশি হব teu eto khushi hob He/She will be so happy

Negative Form of the Future Tense[edit | edit source]

The negative form of Future Tense is formed by using the negative marker 'নাই' (nai), which is added in between the verb and the suffix '-bo' or '-obo'.

For example,

Assamese Pronunciation English
মই নাহয় আহিব mui nahoy ahhib I will not come
তুমি নাঙৰাওঁ নাওব-অব tumi nangorao nao-b-o-bo You will not dance
তেওঁ নাই খাওব teu nai khoaw-b-o He/She will not eat

Using the Future Tense with Modal Verbs[edit | edit source]

Modal verbs in Assamese include 'পাৰা' (para), 'হব' (hob), 'কৰা যাব' (kora jab) and 'বহুতেই' (bohutei) to express abilities, possibilities, obligations and emphatic meanings respectively.

To create the Future Tense with modal verbs, these verbs are placed in the sentence, followed by the verb in the Future Tense.

For example,

Assamese Pronunciation English
মই খাদিম হব পাৰো mui khaadim hob paro I will be able to work
তুমি ভাল নাওব-অব কৰা যাব tumi bhal nao-b-o-bo kora jab You will be able to do well
তেওঁ বহুতেই খাওব teu bohutei khoaw-b-o He/She will definitely eat

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To better illustrate the usage of Future Tense in Assamese, here's a dialogue between two friends:

  • Person 1: মই হুঙসনি কাম কৰা ত ছিলো। (Mui hungshoni kam kora toh silo. - I had work to do)
  • Person 2: বাসতী আহিব নাওক? (Basti ahhib naok? - Will you come home?)
