Hello and welcome to the "Complete 0 to A1 Georgian Course". In this lesson, we will be focusing on money and currency in Georgian. As a Georgian language teacher for 20 years, I can assure you that this lesson will be a fun and informative experience.

Basic Vocabulary

Let's start by learning the basic vocabulary for money and currency:

Georgian Pronunciation English
ლარი (lari) lɑɾi Lari
თეთრი (tetri) tʰɛt’ri Tetri (100th part of lari)
დოლარი (dolari) do.lɑ.ri Dollar
ევრო (evro) ɛvro Euro
ფუნტი (p’unti) p’un.ti Pound sterling

As you can see, Georgian Lari has its own unique symbol (₾). It is highly recommended that you get familiar with the currency before traveling to Georgia.

Other words and phrases that you might find useful when talking about money and currency are:

  • ფული (puli) - Money
  • გადარიცხვა (gadarichkva) - Exchange
  • ბანკი (banki) - Bank
  • კურსი (k’ursi) - Exchange rate
  • ბანკომატი (bank’omat’i) - ATM

Useful Phrases

To make yourself understood when discussing money and currency topics, it's essential that you learn some basic phrases commonly used in Georgian. Here are some ideas:

  • რომელი კურსით არის დოლარი? (Romeli kursit aris dolar?) - What is the exchange rate for dollars?
  • შემიძლია გადავიცეთ ლარები ევროში? (Shemizlia gadavits’et larebi evrosi?) - Can I exchange lari to euro?
  • მაღლა არის კურსი ბანკში (Maghla aris k’ursi banksi) - The exchange rate is high in the bank.
  • მიჩვენე ბანკომატი, გთხოვთ (Michvene bank’omat’i, gt’hovot) - Show me the nearest ATM, please.

Remember that pronunciation can be quite difficult in Georgian, so practice as much as possible.

Shopping for Currency

When shopping for currency, you can exchange at any bank or exchange booth that displays "ვალუტის გაცვლისას" (valut’is gats’vlisasa) which means "currency exchange". Remember to have your passport with you as it is usually required, and be aware of the exchange rate to avoid getting scammed.

Final Tips

When traveling, it is always wise to carry cash with you. While card payments are usually available in Georgia, small businesses may not accept them. Also, make sure to have small denominations with you, as large bills may not be accepted everywhere.

I hope this lesson has been helpful and informative. Remember to practice these new phrases and vocabulary as much as possible as you continue your Georgian language journey.
