Southern Kurdish Vocabulary - Colors

Hi Southern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about colors in Southern Kurdish. Knowing colors is essential when describing things in a language. It is also helpful in day-to-day communication.

Colors

Below are the colors in Southern Kurdish together with their translations in English, and with corresponding pronunciation in IPA:

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
سپی [spɛj] White
قه‌ڕی [qæ.ɾiː] Black
سه‌رشت [sɐrʃt] Red
زەرد [zæɾd] Yellow
شین [ʃiːn] Blue
ئەمه‌رگی [æmæɾɡiː] Purple

You can use these colors to describe everyday things around you. For example, you can say:

  • مەبینی سوره‌کە سەپیە. (Mebînî sureka sepiya.) – “The wall is white.”
  • ئەو خاوەنێکە قه‌ڕیە. (Ew xawaneke qahriye.) – “That chair is black.”

Dialogue

To further help you use these words in context, let’s look at a small dialogue.

  • Person 1: ئەو گه‌لاکە نەمەردەبێت؟ (Ew gelake nemerdebêt?) – “What color is that shirt?”
  • Person 2: ئەو گه‌لاکە قه‌ڕییە. (Ew gelake qahriye.) – “That shirt is black.”
